“My eighth graders began the year having performing on an average fourth-grade level in reading and writing. The children of generations of poverty and a weak education system, they were very far behind in their literacy skills, as well as their exposure to and understanding of the world. Amanda Elzy High School is a highly segregated school in Greenwood, Mississippi, and lacks many of the necessary resources that would be needed to greatly improve the performance of the students. The staff and teachers, however are doing our best to push student achievement to its highest levels. We want to equip our students with a strong foundation for life and prepare them for the many challenges they will face when they leave our school. Without basic resources, it is difficult to achieve the level of teaching that will help these students close the major gaps in their education. With your help, we can work together to provide excellent books, resources and lessons to these students, support their learning, and push them to success in college.”
