My students pride themselves on preparing three sharp pencils every night as part of their homework, but there are still times when we need a sharpener. I teach a special (to us!) method of illustration to my students where they create a background, middle-ground, and foreground using light pencil FIRST, then, as they re-trace the lines in (felt-tip) pen, the goal is to enhance and improve the specifics of each line throughout the illustration. Once complete (and dry), the pencil can be erased and then students can fill in the color fields with crayon or other color. The effect is similar to stained glass and very impressive. It's a magnificaent way to develop vocabulary and general background knowledge and the kids love being able to produce a professional result. The only catch is that the pens are so very expensive that I mainly demonstrate it and unless a particular student has a pen of their own, it's not possible for me to teach them all at once.
