“I teach Earth Science and Technology to four classes of sixth grade students. A majority of our student population receives free or reduced lunch and 100% of our students are representative of underserved minorities. I am working to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) opportunities to my students through real world problem solving, field-based learning experiences, interactive models and media, and lab investigations. While others would consider our students to be at-risk, at Jefferson we hold them to the highest standard and expect that they are no less than students of excellence.”

The sixth grade was recently moved from the elementary school setting to the middle schools. The science labs are already being utilized by the 7th and 8th grade science teachers and so I am in a regular classroom without tables. This classroom setting makes conducting hands-on learning experiences and teamwork a bit more challenging. These tables will prepare the students for middle school and high school science learning experiences by setting the example of how a team works together to conduct an authentic science investigation.
