All programs are structured adventure expeditions integrated with academic studies in marine science, literature, arts, humanities, math and history. Operated in partnership with schools, colleges, research organizations, museums and other educational institutions, these courses yield a powerful, individual transforming experience upon which students build a sense of self, a sense of place and confidence in their ability to learn.
The challenges of seafaring and direct are direct and powerful. As full participants in the ship's operation, students are invigorated, excited, challenged and engaged in their education. They own their achievements in a way that is rare in modern society.
On board a sailing ship, this strength of experience occurs in the context of a well defined society. As a member of the crew, a student quickly learns that success depends on teamwork, and that teamwork depends on mutual trust and respect. All of this combines to enhance an academic curriculum which runs concurrently with the operation of the ship. Courses of study are designed to take advantage of the sea and the immediacy of the experience.
