At over 59 million, teachers are the largest group of trained professionals in the world. They know who is sick, who is missing, who is orphaned by AIDS. As Founder of Teachers Without Borders, I have long known that teachers are the key to a sustainable future.
Teachers are catalysts for change. Nevertheless, teacher preparation, in many places, is scattered, inconsequential, even missing entirely. In a recent study conducted in 63 countries, over 50% of the teachers were not qualified. Zambia loses over 1,000 teachers to HIV/AIDS each year. The world’s classrooms are understaffed, too; 7 million more teachers are needed. In short, the world needs excellent teachers, and the children deserve them.
Teachers Without Borders (TWB) is an international organization advancing the quality of universal education through teacher professional development. We seek to support local teachers with opportunities to learn from each other and both apply their knowledge to the classroom and share it globally. To learn more about our efforts to educate teachers, worldwide, please view our website at www.teacherswithoutborders.org. Join our organization. (It’s free!)
