Think about this: In America today, Latino and African American 17-year-olds have math and reading skills at the same level as white 13-year-olds. Each year 1.2 million students do not graduate from high school on time and approximately HALF of inner-city students of color do not graduate from high school on time. African American students graduate at 51%, Latinos at 55% and their white counterparts at 51%.
These aren't new problems, they go back decades, leaving children under-educated and unprepared. We call this the achievement gap -- and the time to close it is now. Our public schools cannot continue to fail millions of students each year.
The Education Equality Project is a non-partisan group of elected officials, civil rights leaders, and education reformers working to bring equity to our public education system. We are building a movement of students, teachers, parents, & leaders to eliminate the racial and ethnic achievement gap in public education.
